Animal materials were used by early humans and Native Americans to construct warm, weatherproof shelters. Historically, animal skin was used to cover even golf balls, and the sails of some of the early ships were made of leather! The majority of contemporary leather goods, such belts, shoes, and wallets, are used as apparel and accessories, but there is still a strong market for them. The most well-known animal skin product is probably cowhide, which is the natural skin and hair of cows. After the hide is removed from the cow, it is salted and tanned to make it dry and softer. Thanks to recent technical improvements, this process can now be completed much more quickly than it used to—up to a year. Cowhide is a highly popular material for furniture and rugs. It is durable, flexible, and simple to maintain.
